Our story
We are the owners of multiple ice cream shops and realize the waste our industry creates. We also understand the truth about prior ‘compostable’ bio plastics and sought out a better alternative. Not wanting to increase costs just for a product that was no better for the world than traditional Polystyrene, we stuck with traditional plastic… Until now!
We have partnered with a Plant Switch to manufacture cutlery for our business and yours for a brighter future for us all.
Not all biodegradable plastic are equal
We have been interested in compostable products for years but the term ‘compostable’ is up for debate so we could never get past the cost. Non PHA products such as PLA, which is the typical ‘compostable’ plastic in the market, is only compostable under very specific commercial conditions. If you do not send PLA plastic to a specific type of commercial composting facility it will never break down. And even if you do, the process of commercial composting creates microplastics and takes a huge amount of energy. PHA plant based plastics are the new frontier in biodegradable plastic technology and will break down under natural conditions. Even in salt water!
How we made the change to PHA
PHA plant based plastics are at the forefront of biodegradable plastic technology. This means costs are temporarily higher until scale is reached in production. But with adoption in the marketplace costs will come down. But not without your help and adoption. Until then here is how we managed the cost increase over polystyrene in our business.
1) We increased the base price of our core products by a small amount but greater than the incremental cost of making this change
2) We promote the positive environmental change in our shops and educate customers on why we are different and why we care. This builds greater customer satisfaction and loyalty.
By making this change we were are able to increase customer satisfaction and loyalty AND PROFITS. All while helping to end a huge source of plastic waste. WIN WIN!
